My name is Helen Anne Smith, and I am the founder of Burum Collective; an informal drinks publication and platform for those working in beer, wine and cider.
Burum Collective was born out of a passion for sharing, and a longing for an inclusive drinks space, with access to educational resources, as well as a blog for people to be able to express joy for their discipline, in whatever way feels comfortable to them.
I am very lucky to be working with wine writer Rachel Hendry, who has been on this project since day one, and is now Burum’s incredible co-editor. And thanks to our Patreon, and Wayfinder funding from Cloudwater; we now work with and pay contributors from all over the world, as well as our in-house illustrator Elliot-James Comanescu.
Myself and Rachel have been working in the hospitality industry in Cardiff for over four years, from high end restaurants, speciality coffee shops, craft beer bars and kitchens. We’ve seen a lot in this short time, and are both incredibly passionate about helping to move the industry forward in any small way we can. We’d like to see unionisation across the hospitality sector, for workers rights and working conditions to drastically improve. We’d like these spaces to be safer and more inclusive for those of marginalised backgrounds, for staff to have the opportunity for career progression and training.
Alongside our long term goals, our short term goal is to produce and support drinks content that speaks to everyone. To strip away any formality, snobbiness and even stubbornness from beer, wine and cider. We want to invite people in, not keep them out.
Why am I telling you all of this?
Well, the wonderful team at Two Belly have asked us to add to their already wonderful collection of drinks writing, meaning that over the next few months we'll be bringing you two short pieces a month. Some will be educational. Some will be personal. Some will be fun... maybe even ridiculous!
We’re both really looking forward to connecting with you all, over a little beer, wine, cider—and of course cheese! In the meantime if you want to check out any of our work then you can head over to our website, Instagram and Twitter.
